It's all but confirmed that Aether made silvallies to fight a "threat." Probably the ultra beasts. My guess is that aether and skill have a cipher-Snagem relationship and gladion got his little bio weapon from his sister. It likes him enough to eventually evolve, but we've had people like Cyrus have Crobat so it probably doesn't immediately mean he's a good guy.

To keep his friend Type:Null out of the hands of Aether. They met in their laboratory where they experimented on Pokemon to harness an energy powerful enough to recreate the Ultimate Weapon (end result being the complete fuckery of the balance of nature, start plot with Perfect Zygarde, the island guardians and the False God Silvally). This goes completely against his morals so he steals Type:Null in an effort to keep him safe. If Arceus represents creation, Silvally represents destruction.
