I love it. Gives protags more character and has decent storylines.

Here's a tip if you want to enjoy something new, don't compare them to anything else. It creates false expectations and invalidates the whole experience. If you want to read pokespe, read it without comparing it, otherwise you'll just be bummed out thinking it wasn't as good as Games of Thrones or anything else you want it to be.

How does the whole series compare to a typical battle shonen?

It's good, not like typical shonen of powering up or yelling, since it has actual tactics in the form of pokemon abilities and form, like hitmonlee stretching. While sometimes the plot moves too fast or too sudden, its really enjoyable to read in one sitting unless you like the trainers interacting with their pokemon more.

From what I recall it's a lot better because you don't have some of the tropes like needing to train or learn a new technique to beat a tough foe. It also fits that later Gym Leaders and such may be stronger overall.

In the games having a Pokedex is incredibly rare and a sign of instant respect. As far back as gen 1. The manga's only portraying the way they're meant to be depicted.
