It zooms in weird because in the important battles, the camera is tied to the character's animation.

When it's zooming in on his chest or crotch, it's because there's something of emphasis on the actual character for that scene in that spot.
And when he throws the pokeball, the screen zooms out and centers on the character's head/upper body, so if Kukui is taller than them, it centers on a part lower on him.

This means that the first three Kahunas are around Kukui's height, only clipping him off screen a bit.
But the fourth Kahuna is SHORT. Like, below Kukui's pecs short.

There's two different "types" of intros.
