She's a good character, just surrounded by bad writing. What we hear of her story and what we see of her role is very interesting. And it was nice seeing someone like her on the side of good for once.

I still like her, though. But if she saw more consequences to her actions and had her learn from her mistakes some more, she would have been one of my favorite characters.

So who is Aster? In the manga she's just a friend or w/e, but it makes me curious.

Aster was the original Lorekeeper who was supposed to tame Rayquaza and stop the meteor. She was younger than Zinnia, not actually her daughter but Zinnia looked after her and developed a sort of motherly bond with her. Then she died, and the title passed to Zinnia. Zinnia blamed herself for her death and went a bit nutty under the pressure knowing she wasn't prepared for the role, and started talking to Aster's Whismur as if was actually Aster.

That's my take on it, nothing else fits enough to explain it.

Good on paper, very good in fact. Boring as hell in the games themselves though.

They portray her as a straight up villain in the manga.

She becomes egocentric and extremely selfish, was responsible for Norman turning out like he did, Ruby's scar, etc.

And then she tried to take control/tame Fug, (who'd already chosen Ruby and Sapphire) who also knew she awoke the other two stooges, so he wasn't having it and she finally got her comeuppance by getting crippled.

Whereas her only real crime in the game besides instigating terrorism, vandalism and grand theft was being boring and kind of nuisance.

She's a hastily inserted character designed to have Delta Episode revolve around her. When she is around, all other NPCs become incompetent and incapable of resisting her. She randomly knows meta shit her character has no business knowing, because shitty exposition.
She fucks up Steven's plan to stop a meteor from destroying the world, because she thinks she can get Rayquaza to destroy it. She can't.
Thankfully the MC exists. Otherwise she would have doomed the world to destruction because she's a stupid bitch.

Basically, there's a meteor about to destroy the world and the plan is to teleport the thing to another dimension. Seems like a good plan, but Zinnia shows up and ruins it. Her reasoning is that you might be dooming another world in the other dimension and she already has a different plan of her own. This is after you find out she was secretly behind team Aqua/Magma summoning the primal mons that almost destroyed the world so her reasoning and motives seem questionable. Then you find out she's part of a dragon cult that thinks she can use Rayquaza destroy it, which is supposed to explain why she's been running around stealing mega stones, but fug doesn't cooperate so you wind up doing it instead after it eats a macguffin you've been carrying around almost the whole game. Then she disappears, her task being completed by you, and everyone's mad she didn't face any sort of consequences for her dastardly deeds.

Incredibly simply put, great design but a completely retarded character. There's a reason GF has been using the Gym/Elite 4/Champion progression for six generations, they can't write their way out of a paper bag. The Delta Episode honestly makes me a bit worried what SuMo is going to look like, since there's apparently even more of a focus on the story.

Really though, she's just a victim of bad planning on GF's part. The Delta Episode takes maybe 15 minutes because you just fly from one cutscene encounter to another with a lot of talking but you're not really doing much. If they worked her into the game like they should have I think people wouldn't be so hypercritical.

Only decent part about ORAS was the Delta Episode. I really enjoy lore though, and it set up the scene really nicely for Sun & Moon. I constantly remember wondering after playing that and then hearing Masuda's tie up quote what exactly the next game would be. Never would have that the lore would have become so complex since then
