Except most of gen 4 was shit gameplay wise. Even Platinum gets nostalgia glasses here and was still super slow. HGSS was a minor improvement but again nostalgia glasses are why these games are still so expensive. Gen V was weird in a good way.

I mostly agree with this categorization, but BW had a better story than B2W2 and were just as enjoyable for me. They weren't some awkward new stage of the series, but represent the 2.5D era coming into its maturity after the growing pains with gen 4.

1998-2001 was the golden age for me. I played Blue then Yellow then Crystal without ever losing interest or abandoning the franchise. Then I didn't bother buying a GBA until gen 3 dropped and thought the designs were stupid. Sapphire/Emerald was Pokemon's "dark age" for me. I started getting nostalgic for Pokemon again around 2005 and bought GoD and Colosseum for their heavy Johtoddler nostalgia-pandering, and Leafgreen. I've pretty much been up to date with the franchise ever since, but to this day I have never played RSE and thought ORAS were some of the weakest games in the series.
