Humanity was trying to clone Arceus and seperate itself from the need for Pokemon, because of the amount of times Pokemon have caused the world to be destroyed. In that they made Pokemon/Human hybrids called Ultra Beasts, who unfortuantely are neither Pokemon or Human and they struggle with their identities. Eventually they all start to go haywire, and it is your job to capture them and return them to the creators, where hopefully they can be supressed to at least attempt to live normal human lives.

Meanwhile you're a kid from Kanto running around beating up the locals for small sums of money.

Interdimensional ayylmaos invade reality, disguising themselves as both thugs and a NPO for abused Pokemon.

The island Guardian Deities get curbstomped, so you have to seek out the guardians of the universe to protect them. Turns out they never existed in the first place and literally were legends, so the next best option is to evolve this little nebula Pokemon. You eventually do that and travel to a temple that acts as a gateway between dimensions. There you team up with you from an alternate reality who has the other box legend. You double battle against Cosmicrab, Devour of Space and Time, and defeat or capture it.

Post-game storyline is about Gladion, Type: Null, Aether Paradise being abandoned (and thus how you can capture some old mons not in the Alola Dex), and the final UB (the edgelord).

The End

Ultra Beasts are extraterrestrials that arrived on a meteorite as blobs of genetic material. To survive on Earth, they sought after human hosts, who they deemed as less immediately dangerous than Pokemon. After a long period of time living with the human hosts, their physical and behavioral characteristics will transform to roughly match their own host. Because some of the humans who came into contact with Ultra Beasts belonged to the genetic science group Aether Corp, they became threats to humans and Pokemon alike.

It is of note that human hosts who were particularly peaceful or careful with their Ultra Beast will produce a specimen that is not hostile unless threatened or challenged.
