It took to level 27 to get Cyndaquil a fire type move that wasn't flame wheel in original GSC but if you won at the game corner you could get flamethrower or fire/thunder punch from Goldenrod. Combined with EQ, Typhlosion was practically unstoppable, Meganium was pretty good and Feraligatr killed everything with surf, ice punch and bite.

Whitney was a pain in the ass.

As long as you strat'd and grinded a bit the games were really easy, but being the first time I had played Pokemon I tried to take Falkner on with a team of two pidgeys, my starter and a HootHoot which BTFO'd me and I went into struggle with Morty. The gym puzzles were also the hardest.

They were about the same difficulty, I felt, but with HGSS before Red the E4 levelled up significantly which made going in for experience ez whereas with GSC I remember just killing all the mons in mount silver a couple of hundred times.

It's easier when you use the super OP tanky Pokemon like Lanturn with Volt Absorb. I equipped it with a choice scarf that mum sent me, grinded on the crappy voltorb flip and surf/ice beam/thunderbolt/signal beam it could punch a hole through literally everything if not a little hacky.

Dragonite is also very OP once you evolve it. Dclaw or Drush paired with EQ will wreck everything as long as you can outspeed Lance.

Item spam too and the TMs/battle items from Frontier are very powerful, although scarf is still the best.

It is quite grindy though, especially if you use the weaker Pokemon.

I think it illustrates a fundamental difference in their personality.

Maxie suffers a couple of setbacks and for him it's the end of the world because he has such a fatal amount of hubris whereas Archie will just keep walking. Guess it just goes to show how much power can get to your head versus if things don't work out so well.
