There needs to be some kind of new ability or hold item to save all those "Great dual offenses, crap defenses and speed" mon.

Maybe, say, Heatmor has 100 Atk and 50 Def.

It gets hit by a move that would normally deal 20 damage. The game then calculates that if Heatmor had 100 Def, it would have only taken 8 damage. So Heatmor takes 8 damage immediately, and 12 at the end of the round.
