Note that I loved ORAS and Gen 6 would be higher if X and Y weren't so hand-holdy and treating Mega Evolution like it's something sooooo special. There's plot, and then there's "oh here's yet another tutorial yet again" and pretending something EVERYONE can do is special.

I mean, one could compare it to legendaries, but I'd say that's not quite the same.

I could also get you being asked to help research it, that it was a phenomenon that's not fully understood. But it's not, it's treated as some mary sue super power. I much prefer how ORAS handled it- something rare, but not super exceptional.

Before anyone tries to kill me:

I rated them according to how much fun I had when I played them for the first time.

I'm aware of all the flaws gen2 and 3 had, but those were the ones I played with my friends when I was lime 8-13 so I have a lot of fond memories of them.

I rated gen 4 high probably because I played Platinum before D/P

I thought BW and BW2 were okay.

I enjoyed gen 6 but certainly not as much as previous games.

And while I want to play SM like right now, I'm not as hyped as I usually got for previous pokemon games. I don't know why, but that's probably a good thing, since XY and ORAS were a bit dissapointing imo

Battles in XY are at least fun, even if they're easy and the majority of the main game is dull. Online was great because of this too.

Gen V on the other hand always felt like more of a chore. Even BW2. Gym leader AI being "Spam that one move over and over again" was also pretty irritating, and the game insulted my intelligence more often than not with its hand holding. Gen VI handholds, but at least none of it's puzzles directly told you the answer you seek right after you get the riddle with no chance to ignore it or not see it.

I love every Pokemon game I play but gen 3 just really couldn't do it for me like the others did. I was fine with the over abundance of HMs in Sinnoh albeit I disliked "Bring a Bibarel Road" but Hoenn's pissed me off.

This is always somewhat tough for me.

Been playing since the beginning, I believe the biggest jump was from nothing to Gen 1. Personally, gen 3 was the highlight for me, probably my most played gen of them all. Wasn't a big fan of gen 5, I surprisingly enjoyed gen 6 though. Looking forward to gen 7, there seems to be some pretty big changes.

I think I can agree with this. While I saw V and VI to be the pinnacle of the series in terms of designs, there were still hit and miss ones. I only dislike two designs in Alola, which are Pikipek's first evo and Alolan Persian, so that's a much better ratio for good Pokemon.

Gen I is alright. It's playable and fun to mess with some of its battle mechanic quirks on occasion.

Gen II has 10/10 aesthetics and I love Johto so much, sadly the Kanto postgame holds the game back from being truly amazing. If they spent the time and data used to add Kanto to instead make Johto a little bigger and a little more detailed, it could've been perfect.

Gen III I hate to play, the engine despite being 60FPS feels terrible and is slow as hell in battle. People complain about the speed of Gen IV, but there's lots of shit like how it takes three seconds for the actors to crawl into the stage compared to Gen IV's one second intros for battle even in DP. RSE is an eyesore too, and mechanically it's in the awkward teen years between the simpler Gen II and the unaltered since mechanics of Gen IV.

Gen IV's pretty good overall. I have some autistic nitpicks on HGSS which knock it down half a notch but otherwise it's solid. Never had issues with the speed of it, even in DP, though I prefer how Gen V and VI feel.

Gen V would be five if BW1 didn't exist, and if BW2 didn't exist it would be one. It's amazing how the best and worst games exist simultaneously in the same generation. No, BW1's Regional Dex isn't a con. It's not a pro for me either, personally.

Gen VI was pretty weak with little to do outside of the main story and connectivity, but I honestly adored ORAS for the duration of the "campaign" though as soon as Delta Episode starts it goes to shit, and for both I love all the vast improvements made to getting into competitive and its connectivity aspects. For the first time since DP I loved just meandering about the region in XY because of all that. For whatever reason though, I don't enjoy doing all that shit in ORAS. Even though it has more to do solo, I only clocked like eighty hours VS 600 in XY.

As for Gen VII, I refrain from hype these days in games in general. But other than purposely dampening expectations, I'm expecting a game on par with XY.

Gen I: Still has the best overall collection of pokemon designs, best designed region, an iconic soundtrack, and introduced the core gameplay that's still the backbone of the series to this day. I replayed Yellow recently for the first time in maybe 15 years and I was surprised how little I actually missed. However the gameplay mechanics (single special stat, psychic types, crits) are utterly broken to the point that PVP is a joke, the UI is truly horrendous (no skill descriptions, needing to change boxes manually, very limited item storage) and the movepools of most pokemon are awful. The good outweighs the bad

Gen II: Introduces a shitload of features that makes the game far more recognisable as the pokemon of today (most notably breeding, hold items, hugely improved UI) all pokemon games are braindead easy so I find the level curve complaints a bit silly, but sure Kanto definitely feels a little underdeveloped. Johto is fairly mid-tier as a region and while there are some real nice mons this gen there's a definite step down in terms of consistent design quality. As an overall package though gen 2 is an undeniable step up from gen 1.

Gen III: Hoenn has the second best set of mons in the series IMO, it keeps that artistic simplicity from gen 1 but the mons are really out there and unique. The region itself is a bit bogged down by le meme water I'm afraid. Abilities and double battles are neat introductions from this gen. Oh, and the frontier ofc. No backwards compat must've been a massive blow at the time, but if it hadn't happened then it would've happened later on I suppoe? FRLG are basically just RBY with the RSE engine, which is still probably preferable for a newcomer than playing RBY, but even so this gen aged very quickly. Overall gen 3 has its issues but gets too much hate

Gen IV: Sinnoh gets gay as fuck at some points thanks to the most retarded layout of any region ever. The soundtrack is one of the best of the series. Gen VI: I really dislike mega evolution, it's the first time pokemon seemed to be doing 'cheap gimmicks' (a trend they're now continuing with Z-moves and Alolas). It just seems really dumb when you could give old mons new evos or just buff their BST/ movepools. Kalos as a region also feels very lazy and uninspired and it's the first time a pokemon OST ever let me down. I will give it props for making competitive breeding accessible, and introducing 3D models, but I feel like the spectacle of le 3D was kind of distracting them from actually putting effort into the games. ORAS are more enjoyable than the original games, but nowhere near the level of HGSS in terms of quality remakes. No frontier is unforgivable. Overall I'm really down on this gen, the best thing about it was the competitive side of things by far.

gen 1 - 4 - first one, close to my heart and always special
gen 2 - 3 - designs felt a bit bland and returning to kanto felt a bit lazy to me
gen 3 - 5 - hoenn was my favourite, so much time spent playing emerald
gen 4 - 2 - can't remember it properly to be honest but the pokemon designs arent terrible
gen 5 - 4 - fun pokemon and cool games
gen 6 - 5 - 3d models made me hard and trainer customization was bomb, returning to hoenn in the remake was just the icing on the cake
gen 7 - 0 - pokemon designs look cool but otherwise i dont know anything about the actual game's story
