They are Dark/Flying types inspired by Oni masks. I didn't just want to give them masks with horns and hair, so I gave them features that are reminiscent of those. Fearow's Japanese name is Onidrill so that's where the idea came from. I always hated these two birds so I made them something I would use. Native American feathers were also an inspiration for Spearow.

What makes you think it needs a water typing? Being based on a naval mine isn't really a reason.

I was speculating based on how naval mines are used tactically. Normal typing can boost the power of Explosion, and Dark can reflect the hidden and sneaky manner of the tactic and boost moves like Foul Play or Sucker Punch which reflect how mines can punish blindly attacking foes. The only issue is that Normal type moves aren't effective against Steel type.

It's a sea snake... not an eel (although it does look like an eel somewhat).

I am the guy who made the suggestion that prompted the artist who drew that drawing to draw it. Pelamis platurus is the only snake native to hawaii.

I'm glad someone posted it, though. It (and the other version) were my two favorite fan designs.

They only show up dead during El Nino years. They're completely pelagic and have only washed up in Hawaii close to 20 times.
Yes, Hawaii has a lot of eels due to many other mid sized reef predators not being able to make the long pelagic trip, but the design is definitely based on a yellow bellied sea snake.
Snake eels are also a thing, but the image has fangs, the color scheme and everything.

Megas are still going to be in the games, it just looks like they aren't making any new ones. At least not this time. But in order to feasibly keep Mega evolutions obtainable in the games, all they have to do is place some Mega Stones around the overworld for the player to pick up. Alolan forms are bound to Alola by lore itself, so it makes no sense to just throw an icy Vulpix or a black Rattata in a new region when they're specifically variants that are unique to Alola.
