Actually this is one of pokemon's core design philosophies. At least early on, when they were designing mons the design team was given the direct instruction of "if it's too difficult for a kid to draw, then it's no good". That may have changed now, but back then it was smart to have designs even a child could design since they are, you know, the core audience.

But if you were really old enough to have played Yellow on release, let alone Red and Blue, you'd know that gen 6 and almost certain 7 are objectively better than gen 4 and 5. The fact that you so fervently hump the /vp/ bandwagon shows that you fall into the same demographic as the majority of its posters– that is to say, children who grew up gen 4 or 5 and only played the originals after the fact, if at all.

Gen 4 was a disaster from a gameplay standpoint, and gen 5 was so caught up in trying to fix that trainwreck that it didn't actually manage to make any major advancements. We've only just gotten to the point where Pokemon is moving forward again, after two generations of stagnation, and Sinnohfoeti are terrified at being removed from their comfort zone. "This isn't what Pokemon is about!" They lack the perspective to know how things have changed before, to put things like Mega Evolution and Fairy type into context. For them, Hold Items, Abilities and Dark Type always existed, so the franchise has always been what they knew.

I know this is a scary time for you, I think every kid goes through a "not muh Pokemon" phase. Most of us hit that age during gen 3. I just hope you're around to enjoy the series once you grow up a little.

Wimpod is definitely more of a wharf roach than anything. Its appearance definitely takes aspects of a horseshoe crab and trilobite, but the fact that it's skittish, scavenges, and collects garbage leans more toward wharf roach.

The evolution is definitely adding on to this, but it's really just a big scary marine arthropod in general, probably nothing EXACTLY specific.

What were you even expecting from a pokemon designed to have a fearful personality to the point that it will just give up very easily? An edgelord approach would be a consistent progression and wouldn't seem as forced. And I normally hate edgy pokemon but its obvious Wimpod was clearly designed to be a high risk, high reward mon with its evolution looking formidable enough to make opponents wimp out instead. And this was a common expectation people had for it.

Bug is a pretty good type. It only has 3 weaknesses. Game Frick just suck at Pokemon design and give most bug types shitty stats or an awful secondary typing.
Bug/Steel or Bug/Water are very competitive typings.
