Even with its off-brand Multitype and weaker Judgement, Silvally was still too powerful to control completely, so he slapped restraining masks on them and called it square. Lusamine found out about his little project, flipped shit over the brazen unethicality of it all, and fired his sorry ass. Most of the Type:Nulls escaped into the wild after the project was shut down, while the few that didn't were put into Aether's adoption and care programs. They're now suffering from a PR nightmare because people are making a connection between wild Type:Nulls' masks and Aether's logo, resulting in widespread suspicion. Meanwhile, ex-Professor Guzma goes full thug, becomes ya boi Guzma, and forms Team Skull in order to seek revenge.
