As someone who cares more about competitive Pokemon than the designs of Pokemon, gen 7 looks hype as fuck. The low amount of Pokemon is almost a non-issue because so many of them seem good. The relative lack of long evolution lines means that there's a very large ratio of fully evolved pokemon to total pokemon, especially if we can use Ultra Beasts. Plus, there are all sorts of pokemon with niche, unique abilities this generation, meaning they'll be able to find a unique place in competitive play. Even apparent shitmons like Mimikyu and Pyukumuku are getting made up for by having strong and unique abilities. I am nothing but hype.
