There are about 30 Z moves and 18 Alolan forms they focused on those rather than Megas in a way you could call the Alolan forms megas if they arranged the stats perfectly.

GF jumped the shark the second megas became a thing.

GF is just getting desperate for more customers and are trying a different gimmick on every single new gen. I am positive that on the future gen they will come up with a new and more ridiculous gimmick, it will make Z-moves look tame by comparison.

If they don't, then I think Smogon should ban any megas stronger than top OU Pokémon. If they allow them on the basis that only one is allowed on a team, then teams will be limited by always having one of a small select pool of Pokémon.
