To be fair XY had the same problem, MC showed emotion only during the Xerneas/Yveltal cutscene.
In ORAS I don't think he expressed anything ever.

I'm hoping for Sun/Moon but...

Noticed this in the demo, it's pretty jarring to see other NPCs emoting while your character is still smiling like a preschool cartoon character.
