Canon Game Ash = Red. It's pretty obvious Red and Blue aren't called that, these are their nicknames, they're Ash (Satoshi) and Gary (Shigeru), exactly like in the anime.

Because his successes and failures mostly serve to lead into the next video game to push, and developing a character is pointless when the core audience constantly outgrows the show anyway so they just start from the ground up in every region. I haven't watched the show since the orange islands and a few random episodes, but I'm going to guess he hasn't won a pokemon league since then and probably still gets half his badges out of pity
