For the same reason that Rock isn't called Stone, Ground isn't called Earth and Flying isn't called Air. Pokemon wasn't meant to be anything more than a one-off game, but it took off and became a phenomenon. The original english translation was probably just a really shitty literal translation instead of someone sitting down and thinking "This sounds silly, let's localize it a bit.", and once the trend took off, it was too late to change between the card game, anime and games all using the existing translated terms without confusing the fuck out of everyone and making all the existing media outdated. Not a satisfying reason, but very likely the explanation.

>>29264327
At least it isn't called Insect type. That'd be actually inaccurate. Bug at least encompasses creepy-crawly stuff with more than four legs and likely some kind of exoskeleton. It's not exactly what you'd call a spider in everyday life, but it's close enough and more accurate than it could be.

>>29266484
That's what he's saying. The guy he replied to suggested changing Grass to Plant, but there are a bunch of fungus pokemon. They aren't grass *or* plants, but at least Plant seems closer to the truth than "Grass". Grass type has flowers, fungus, vines, cotton, lily pads, cacti and carnivorous plants, none of which are grass. Plant would encompass the majority of the type better than Grass, even if fungi are not *technically* plants. In the common consciousness they're close enough as would make no difference when talking in broad strokes of pokemon classification.
>>
>>29264911
It's always bothered me that normal type can be combined with *anything*. In my mind the only reason that typing should exist is to imply a non-elemental aligned creature. We have pokemon *made* of magma or fire, or living icebergs, or blobs of good held together by psychic power, and they fairly well embody a particular elemental affinity, or two in some cases. Normal type should describe things like Farfetch'd or Porygon, who aren't attached to one particular element. Maybe capable of using one or two elemental moves of various types, but otherwise the typical bite/scratch/tackle/physical moves type of fighting.

Then you've got shit like Heliolisk who has normal tacked on for no discernible reason, or Bibarel who is somehow Normal *and* Water type. Like wtf? I guess it could make sense if you rationalize that it's a generally non-elemental creature that has just a passing affinity? Does Heliolisk get a lot of electric moves, or particularly powerful ones? I've forgotten. I know Bibarel doesn't get a *ton* of powerful stuff, and it's stats aren't great either. Maybe that's the thing with normal combos. They're elemental, but not very good at it, so they're kind of in this horrible limbo between being a mundane monster and a lightning spitting dynamo, so they end up being a lackluster Godzilla wannabe and stuck with the Normal label too.

That said, we really could use a regional bird that *isn't* Normal/Flying. I'd just really love a pure flying type that isn't Tornadus for once. Flying seems like the redheaded stepchild that just gets tacked on to creatures with wings if they want to give it a second type but can't come up with anything better. "Noivern could use a second type to differentiate it. What suits it? I guess it *could* be Dark, since it's all black and it evolves from a bat, but it doesn't look mean enough. Eh, fuck it. It's got wings, make it Flying!"
>>
>>29267193

>That said, we really could use a regional bird that *isn't* Normal/Flying.

Talonflame
>>
>>29267193
Types are your typical fantasy elements though. That's just your misconception. There is no elemental plane of bug. No solid block of elemental bug
>>
>>29267305
Oh fuck off with that pre-fried turkey. I don't even know why I dislike it so much. Maybe just because the name is so fucking retarded. Regardless, I meant a *pure* flying type, not flying combined with something else.

Outside of Arceus and Tornadus, the only pokemon that can be pure flying is Silvally, and even then it's the same deal as Arceus and can be *any* type. Flying is the only type with only a single extant pokemon of only that type. I know it works more as a modifier to existing types to give certain pokemon more flavor, but damn, you'd think we could get some kind of pokemon that's focused specifically on being airborne and give it mono-flying type.

>>29267329
I know, but at least bugs are a specific type of creature, just like plants are a specific form of life, and fighting types focus on more nuanced/advanced physical combat. Types are more of a classification in pokemon world, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense how Normal could apply to anything with an "elemental" type. Normal/Fighting makes a decent amount of sense for something that doesn't use shit like focus blast or any elemental punches, just focused on physical combat, but what the fuck does Normal/Electric imply? That it has electric abilities but just sucks at using them so it's more of a normal type that just happens to have a couple of electric attacks? That's the bit that bothers me. If normal is supposed to classify mundane stuff that doesn't display any particular other classification, like being psychic or breathing fire, then it should be reserved for things like regional birds to pair with flying because they don't spit lightning bolts or shit like that, and a few fighting pokemon that don't do crazy zen shit or channel lightning punches. Otherwise it really has no logical reason for being paired with another type. It's normal because it's plain and unremarkable in terms of special abilities, even if it has it's own special strengths and/or gimmicks. You can't exactly be an unremarkable creature that just happens to also generate enough current to electrocute another living creature.
>>
Am I the only one bothered by existence of Fighting type since gen I? I get it that all Pokemon fight and maybe "Martial type" would be more precise, but still, "Fighting" is neither a biological class nor element. It's kinda like having Walking or Eating types.
>>
>>29267799
I guess we have to cope with the fact that types were not very well thought in Gen I (as it was not supposed to be balanced and competitive series back then), and then they had to stay in the next generations as they were. We have Bug type around only thanks to the fact that Tajiri was obsessed with insects, and Normal type was introduced as generic type for many early Pokemon that were not supposed to be good at battles and had no edge against any type of opponent (ironic, considering how strong Snorlax or Tauros turned out to be). It's kinda like with Dragon type in first two generations (supposedly strongest one, available only to the cream of the crop) and Ghost type in Gen I (used only by channelers, normal people cannot even perceive wild Gastlies properly). As new Pokemon were added in future gens, those types simply got watered down and joined the rest, while previously intentionally weak types, like Poison or Bug, received strong moves and usable Pokemon.

Or like a Flying type.

It's probably best understood as the super strength type. Just as psychics have, psychic powers, they're unusually strong and are adept at martial arts. In the case of Bewear, it's probably normal/fighting because it's not adept at martial arts but it is extremely, extremely strong.

"Bug" is an informal term that means "creepy-crawlie" which spiders fall into. If it was "insect" type then you'd have a valid complaint.

This is the correct answer by the way.

There are also a few extra things we often call bugs that are neither insects nor arachnids. For example terrestrial crustaceans like woodlice, such as "pill bugs". Lots of other invertebrates like worms and snails too are occasionally considered "Bugs".

Likely the reason why the Dwebble line is Bug type. Most non-aquatic crustaceans, people often called bugs.
