Because they have personality. They're based on something - yakuza + hyena, so they add at least two new concepts whilst being funny and quirky at the same time. It's similar to Scraggy and Scrafty. Similarly, Magnitogre is ugly as fuck but it's pretty unique for a Pokemon design, so I like it. Snome and Snogre just have great pun names.

By contrast, the "waifu" mons are bland, boring and blatant fapbait. The Dilophosaurus is just a much worse Sceptile. There's too many Fighting monkeys, and they just look like regular monkeys. The blood vessel racoons are a great example of how to make something potentially cool and educational and turn it into something completely and utterly boring. No one cares what they represent because they look like shit. All the insects look utter shite. And there's dumb shit trying to be meta/smart like Vectol, Romeo & Juliet and those shitty atom things. I know what the two are and what they do, but only because of them being so boringly designed that I had to go check why they're even there. And unsurprisingly the attempt at making the fat tanuki interesting in design is so edgy and completely absent in its actual design with almost no visual representation that I'd honestly rather take Dusknoir. A player should not have to see more than a still image of a Pokemon to have it convey something integral about its design, which the raccoons fail to do. Leukoon being able to open its mouth really wide and show off a black hole does not make it an interesting design, just as Gardevoir being able to produce a black hole does not make it interesting. You have to fucking show that to the player instead of trying to be subtle and clever about it, since all you're really showing is a fat albino Sentret with oh-so-spooky blank eyes.

The very first design of Magnitogre looked like hot garbage and only got into the dex because the artist threw a fit that no one was giving him feedback on his shit (this was before we started using the 2/3rds majority survey and the dex was just whoever had the most recent image).

That one is infinitely better after constant redesigns. You just don't know how bad it could've been.

I don't remember what else he designed but i don't think it changed as drastically. There is definitely at least one more design that artist at least submitted but i cannot for the life of me remember what it was.
