Every alternate form has its separate data. However, you can't catch totems, no they are registered in the dex, that's why game Freak didn't make sprites for them. However, they needed a placeholder to prevent the game from crashing.

There's a lot of valid points on this one, like how Hakamo-o doesn't have a totem sprite filler like the rest and how Raticate (an alolan with gender differences on the base form) has it, but everyone insists that totems just have unique IDs and so require crash handlers in team preview.

BTW, these black spots aren't "failed" datamines, that's LITERALLY the file in the game. There are files that are literally black squares in those slots. There's no hidden info, that's what Gamefreak put there.

I actually don't think this is the national dex. I think this is the island dex. Kalos was split into 3 dexes and I think the same thing happened here with the islands.

I think they just put the data for one island in the demo and that's why there are holes.

So, I have two questions that came up when looking at the complete Pokedex.

First, Greninja obviously isn't in it. So, I'm guessing that just means it cannot be caught, and Ash-Greninja will have a ??? Next to its Pokedex number until you get the national Dex yeah?

Second, why does Spinda have two forms? There is a model similar to the XY model, but also one with an open mouth. Male/Female difference?

My guess is that girl from the newest trailer is the ghost captain.

They're totems. They come after Alolan Raticate, Gumshoos, Vikavolt, Lurantis, Salandit2, Mimikyu, and Kommo-o.

Ilima = Raticate or Gumshoos
Mallow = Lurantis
Lana = Wishiwashi (already huge and locked in School Form, so it doesn't need an extra model)
Kiaew = Salandit2
Sophocles = Vikavolt
Ghost Girl = Mimikyu
Dragon or Fighting captain = Kommo-o

The blank spaces next to Zygarde are strange, but my guess would that the Core and Cell show up in battle somehow, but aren't usable so they don't get dex sprites.

Also, the two blank sprites have to be a regular and shiny coloring, they can't be gender differences or else there'd be four blank sprites. One for each combo of gender and color.

Now you could question why the totem Hakamo-o from the demo doesn't have a blank sprite, but Greninja doesn't either and that's in the demo. They probably just didn't think to add one but it's demo-only and only a hacker could catch it. You have a dex at the time either.

You also don't need a whole 28 sprites for all the different Minior forms when the shell is always the same color and the shiny core is always black, yet there they are. Every form has its own sprite, some of them are duplicates because the models are identical, and some are blacked out because you can't actually use those forms in battle, but they still need an image to be associated with each form just in case somebody fucks around with the game and gives themself a Pokémon they shouldn't have.

And do you really think it's a coincidence that every single confirmed totem besides Wishiwashi just so happens to have a number of blacked out sprites after it identical to the number of forms it has? Or that the evolved form of the one Totem in the demo also has blacked out sprites after it? Put two and two together.

We've seen shit that seems to be tied to the trail captains we've seen so far, minus Ghost Girl and whatever the Kommo-o one would be on the first two islands ALONE.

We've barely even touched anything on the third, fuckhuge island in previews.
There's no way that there's only 2 remaining trail captains AND they're split between the two remaining islands.

There's gotta be something else to this.
Maybe these 7 are the only ones that are Alolan pokemon? I mean, it doesn't make sense that any Totem wouldn't be a new pokemon, but it's the only explanation I can think of that'd make sense.
