OP here. I don't think it's bad design speaking, but fuck, it just seems to be some random bird, not the evolution of the national bird. If this was a pokémon like delibird/chatot/farfetch'd, i would have liked it, but i don't see how a woodpecker becomes a Toucan. It doesn't even look like an evolution to me.

My bigger issue is that it's not really stylized at all. It's just a fucking toucan. No flair, no pokemon-esk liberties, etc. I don't have issues with a toucan pokemon, but it's just a fucking toucan.

This is kind of my issue. It is really boring looking and there doesn't appear tp be anything interesting going on with it. Pikipek is nothing special ether but first forms tend to not be, Pokemon develop concepts over time as they evolve. Its probably even still.normal/flying which I don't know what the hell they could do to make it good. Talonflame in hindsight probably wasn't really that special either but in fairness peregrine falcon aren't inherently pretty badass and at least being fire type gave it liberty to have little flame details.
