I can see this being the truth, but whoever you are riddle me this, if it was 7 "regular" trials, why was it in the original spanish basically "for each of the four islands" hm? I like the theory, given previous hints on the matter, but unless you got PROOF to back it up, it's as good as my theory, and overall just speculative.
And here's the other issue: Z-Crystals. Given how important Z-Crystals are and how they are tied to moves, I doubt the Elemental Z-Crystals each won't get their own "Trial Captain" ESPECIALLY when it would make sense to divide Melemele into thirds, one side with the probable Bug TC, another with Llima and Sophocles in the city whose Trial is gonna be like a wifi tutorial for all we know.
Plus while it's a creative approach, why wouldn't they just use a gym system to begin with? It would have saved them a lot more time, and would mean less things to think up.
But that's why I think the whole 28 Trials across the 4 Islands make sense, it helps to keep the game "long" or more intricate then before, they get to let EVERY type have a Trial Captain/Kahuna cause there's the 18 Z-Crystals we need. And be weird if random peeps give them to us when pseudo-Gym Leaders give them to us in a way similar to actually badges.
And we don't know, like said lot of confusion and still time on the clock.

Should be fourteen Trials, as Olivia is a Rock Type specialist, and therefore would give us the "Rockium Z." Hala is likely Fighting Type, so he would give us the "Fightium Z." Two other Kahunas = Two other Z-Crystals, meaning a total of fourteen other Crystals would be given out by the Trial Captains.

I see the far left island and melemele having 3 trials and akala and the far right island having 4. In this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oO_P4GX_RA around 1.31 we see the trial captins doing z moves, probaly teaching them to you. So that would mean you get 18 captains but that seems to much so lets say the kahunas will teach you there type's Z-move. So 14 captins, Far left island and melemele are the smallest so they would get less captains. So we have: Lana, mallow, kiawe, maybe sophocles on akala and oliva is the kahuna and we have llima and 2 more on melemele and the kahuna would be hala

I think GameFreak decided to do it like this because of Hawaii's geography and culture. There aren't that many big cities there, and from what we know of Alola, GF is presenting it as a tropical paradise where everyone is in touch with nature. If that's the case, then putting the "gyms" in places like caverns, forests, volcanoes, waterfalls, etc. fits the region better than just buildings in a city.

You can't really REbattle them if you've never battled them before, but yes, that'd be the point of building a league.
I hope you realize I'm not a leaker, though, all of this is pure speculation.
