If you want to make it last a month, I'd suggest doing both. I'd also suggest not playing a Pokemon game within a week or two of SM's actual release, while playing up to release can be hype, you want to avoid burn out effects.
While I'm not leaving, I'm intending to do BB, BB2, and WY all before SM.

Yes.
Even if DP remakes came out next year, its a good idea to play one of the originals to get an idea of what changes and what didn't, especially if its a whole year away.
