Sprites have never universally been good. The models are great, just some of the animations need work.

Because they where made to match the original 1996 Japanese red and green front sprites. When red and green got rereleased in the west and rebranded red and blue they got upgraded front sprites , but for some reason they didn't get upgraded backsprites and just kept the jap originals.

Anyone who hates Gen I does so because they were either toddlers/babies or not even born during that time.
I genuinely feel bad for them. Pokemania was the best part of my mid-childhood and gave me good memories of elementary school.

I don't hate gen 1 itself, but the games are pretty terrible.
I can still enjoy them in an almost ironic way, but I'll never truly enjoy them like I did as a kid again.
