Well they are. So that's your own problem. You haven't even played the game and experienced a world where they are living in the same world as the other Pokemon, so it seems natural, at least to me, that you're having trouble imagining it. I thought the same thing about a lot of Gen 3 and Gen 5's Pokemon when those games first came out. I mean, what the fuck is this thing?

You don't have to like them but if you for whatever reason don't think they "feel" like Pokemon then that's a problem with your own perspective and expectations, not the designers. A Pokemon's design doesn't have to meet your standards. They designed it to be a Pokemon, so it's a Pokemon.

Gen 6+7 definitely have a more cartoony look than other gens, but every gen has its own design sensibilities. Gen 2 is stripped-down and simple, Gen 4 is spikes and lines, Gen 5 is trying to be weird like Gen 1 was, etc.

What's important is that even though the designs have been getting more cartoony and less grounded, the concepts and personalities are stronger than ever. The descriptions we've been getting of new Pokemon gives a very good picture of their personality and ecology which some older Pokemon lack. For that reason alone I'll forgive the cartoony shit.
