It really does annoy me how we have such few variations to choose from, especially when there's a good number that we can't even use for 4 of 6 gens (apricots). Honestly, why create new pokeballs that are so creative and look great and then not include them in games about catching Pokemon?

I'm glad gen 4 introduced new ones, but imo they're mostly ugly. I hope we finally see some new ones in SM; it's overdue and there's a lot of unexplored ideas in the area of new pokeballs.

Staying on topic, I never liked the Dusk ball because it pretty much makes every almost every other ball useless if you play at night. Personally I'd give it a 2.5x catchrate at night and a 3x in caves just to make using other pokeballs more useful. That said, I feel the same way about JWittz's proposed Dawn ball.

I really like the idea of having pokeballs infused with shards that raise the catching rate when used against a pokemon that's weak to the shard's type. Finding shards during your journey or hunting them down sounds nice. It makes you put a little more thought into the pokeball you're gonna use for the pokemon you're hunting down.

I'd kind of prefer it if they were berries instead of shards. It was easy enough to keep track of 4 kinds of shards, but 18 shards sound like too many. Maybe if the shards cover multiple types at once? 6 colors of shards could be used to cover 3 types each, e.g. Blue shards can be used to make either Water, Ice, or Dragon balls.

Perhaps the gems could serve a dual purpose in this regard?

The Horde Ball and Pester Ball would be pretty cool ideas. However, I would not limit the use on the Pester Ball, though; a low catch multiplier would be a decent trade-off for a guaranteed flinch in case of the pokemon breaking free.
