Gym is a big sprawling ranch with successive paddocks with special gates that the trainer has to get through to reach the leader.
defeat the trainers working in the paddock or find and talk to the right mareep/skiddo/ponyta to get the password to open the gate and proceed.

Gym itself was an old run down cram school in the town being squatted in by a group of "reformed" Grunts, Punks, and general ne'er-do-wells. The merry band of rogues is lead by the Gym leader an over the top costumed vigilante that's trying to give former Thugs and other seedy elements a second chance to do good.

The group volunteers in the town, donates, rescues Pokemon, and keeps the area safe from actual seedy elements with their brand of Diet Seedy elements, a bit of antics, and wacky shenanigans. They genuinely do want to do good in the world, but old habits die hard as it were so sometimes they need reigned in. A lot of the trainers in the Gym the main character must battle to get the leader also use Dark-type Pokemon. Gastly's line is also used.

Gym's gimmick is that any and all hazards set in one battle persist to the rest unless the main character clears them with either a Rapid Spin or several devices scattered in the Gym to clear them. Lots of status conditions used by the trainers and leader. An element of the gym is a simple maze to get to the leader, but often the trainers in the gym, upon engaging in battle with the main character and walking to them to battle, block the most obvious path and making the player backtrack and take a different route. This symbolizes the trainers in wanting to do good things but ending up an annoyance to the player.

Upon victory the player is awarded TM06, Toxic, and the Justice Badge. It is a series of 3 purple circles side by side with smaller black circles in them, with small white rings in the black circle.

A post-game side quest involves going through a small building full of enemies with a named NPC antagonist as your battle partner as they have been double crossed. Throughout the encounters in the building, the NPC talks at the player and works through their issues that drove them to be a grunt. They join the gym and award the player a Toxic Plate.

Slightly updated from the thread last night:

+ added my trainer sprite (he's a chuuni motherfucker)
+ moved the Flaffy block down a badge
+ inserted a regular Ampharos phase

I kinda want to fit in an Elekid somewhere, but at the same time I don't want to get rid of Stunfisk for the humor of it. Oh well.

As a side note for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, the Mimikyu is a joke about it sneaking in to be part of the gym and replacing the resident Pikachu (Which presumably fucked off to go eat those special pancakes). When the Pikachu shows up again (as a Raichu) the Mimikyu has already proven itself and earns a spot on the team.

Not necessarily, I think the effect of "whipping it out" (heh) is great thing to keep. I think as long as there's a noticeable presence of Spinarak with the trainers before reaching the leader, it should be sufficient enough.

No one else in the gym should have an Ariados though, but I think you know that already.

Thanks for the input amigos. If the hypothetical engine could handle it there'd probably be a Spinarak logo on the door to the gym and the gym leader's costume would have vague Ariados appearances.

Also yeah, I figure the first trainer would have at least 1 Spinarak and then when you defeat him maybe the first Sticky Web hazard is auto-applied for the next battle. Who knows.

Initially it was just a generic Steel-type gym with Aggron as the signature Pokemon, but eventually I decided to make a team of Steel-type linked mons, i.e. ones that are just combined versions of the previous stage like Magneton and Doublade. The badge is modeled around pyrite crystal twinning as a result. Not sure what the trainer would look like, but ideally you'd face this gym 5th.

Can't make it rn because i'm currently on phone but what about a gym leader who you fight really early that uses pokemon with "potential"? Pokemon like swablu, skrelp, trapinch, horsea, mareep and exeggcute. Then later you face them with their full team where all of those pokemon have become dragon types and realised their full potential. Insert some stuff about how you should always strive to reach your potential or whatever and it could be cool. If anyone wants to make a gym from this that's fine because i probaly won't end up making one anyway.

Forgot to add, also came up with a quick backstory to explain his choices

He would be a researcher who owns a gym but doesn't want to do his job and instead only focuses on his researches about psychic pokemon, his companion would be a female Ralts who would take care of him and work as his assistant (mirroring the real life Freud and his daughter), he would capture an Abra to study teleportation and Abra's strange half asleep nature

He would eventually capture a Drowzee to study the effects of hypnotization on patients and pokemon, somewhere between this and his Drowzee evolving he would face the player where he would have underleved mons and would lose

After losing to the player he would focus more on battling out of curiosity, making a few field trips to capture more psychic mons while evolving and improving his own, slowly growing more attached to his team and battling in general, during one of his field trips he would find his Beldum

After finishing his research on psychics he would have a pretty damn big list of caught mons, after handpicking his last two options he would mount his ultimate team for a rematch
