As for OP, I'm pessimistic about seeing any cross-gen evos for Sun&Moon. If they haven't announced any thus far as a sort of "Look at this! Your old favorites get new evolutions!" marketing gimmick, I don't think there'll be any.

Unless they want to surprise us, but I'm not counting on it.

It made sense not to get any in gen 5 because they wanted to do a parallel of gen 1.

Gen 6 had the opportunity to add cross-gen evos but they opted to do megas instead.
Pokemon that should have gotten traditional evolutions like Mawile got megas instead.

This is the main reason I don't like megas. Now mawile can never get a traditional evolution.

Cross gen evolutions have always been a feature of even gens. Aside from the two that were in gen three, they were all in either gen 2 or 4.

Gen 6 gave us one, and also gave us ~50 mega evolutions that fill a similar design space.

There was never any reason to expect them in gen 7. We'll have to wait and see what happens in gen 8 to actually make a judgement. It could be though that they've been replaced by megas.

Megas are kind of at fault, but they only prevented a few mons from getting new evolutions. At least they gave a lot of megas to mons that were evolved and didn't need proper evos. Now Alola forms are definitely ruining it. They're basically "cross gen evos" without actually being crossgen

I had to scam someone on the GTS offering a "6IV Ditto" for a Magmortar. I managed to get Electivire, Rhyperior and Porygon-Z through some series of miracles.

That makes zero sense considering the existence of Sylveon. Just add new things and accompany new evolutions with them. They've shown absolutely no reluctance to doing this across 20 years. The only argument around that would be adding completely new evolutions on top of previously fully evolved Pokemon due to eviolite and megas. But things like Frosslass and Gallade style evolutions are commonplace cross gen evos.

I wouldn't mind a few more, but i feel like megas and alolan forms have filled a similar niche. Also, as forgettable as it was, the big influx of new evos was technically Sinnoh's gimmick, with evolution methods being Rowan's field of expertise, Mt.Coronet and the eevee rocks being a big deal as a locational evos, and Team Galactic stealing the energy let off during evolution. The only other excuse was gen2 being a direct sequel and picking up a few scrapped ideas, plus the retroactive baby forms and steel evos to pad out the new type. gen 3 line additions were all totally pointless.

Cross gen evos gave me super seizure duck so I'm happy with them. The only ones I hate the look of are Ambipom and Rhyperior. Gliscor and Magmortar are pretty cool looking.

I hate the way they were done. Cross gen evos always need some shitty new way to evolve. The only good one were the move ones so they could just give pokemon the move, othewise they're just shitty requirements that need to be forced into every future game. IE Ice rocks/Grass rocks/Electric zones.

half the cross gen evos we got in Gen 4 were shit, meanwhile the only Megas that are totally unusable are Banette, latios and Audino, but you can omit Latios since it was never going to get an evolution to begin with. Even in Gen 2, a lot of the evos we got were ass like bellossom and scizor (if you'll recall, it only became good in Platinum when it got the ability to use Technician BP)

Mega Mawile is better than any evolution we could've possibly gotten. Same for Sabeleye, Stingulor, Lucario, kangaskhan, etc

Try Perfect Platinum. All trade evos are replaced with level-ups. Just got out of a run where I used P-Z in-game for the first time ever, shit was awesome.

Gen 5 was a soft reboot, Gen 6 had Sylveon and Mega Evos, and Gen 7 has Alola Forms. The latter two aren't exactly the same thing, but they're close enough in terms of concept and effort that I doubt they're gone for good.
