And since the sexes of feminine men have be changed to female in the American releases of Japanese children's games in the past, it's not completely ridiculous to wonder if this could be the case here.

Translators probably don't know the captain's gender since Japanese can skip it completely in a sentence. Languages like French and Spanish need to choose one or it's impossible to translate, it happened in the PWT where the make Norman's child a son, which make people believe Brendan was the canon protag. Japanese used kodomo, which is neutral, which English properly translated to "child". The only source that matters is the Japanese one.

I personally think that, for the first time in a while, GF is trying to make an androgynous character.
