What it has is japanese culture to it, so people outside of japan can't relate. Which is a shame because there are many funny references and good japanese cultural humor.

I don't get why people are comparing Yo-Kai Watch with Pokemon, they're 2 completely different things, the games are different and the Yo-Kai anime literally has no storyline at all.

Pokemon has no competition, 20 years strong and still going, it's most likely never going to be over taken.

The Yu-Gi-Oh manga plot originally wasn't about the Duel Monsters Card Game, it was about an "evil" egyptian spirit using a kid as an avatar playing deadly dare games against bullies and criminals.

The Duel Monsters Card Game was going to be an story arc but the Konami TGC based on it became so insanely popular it would become the Focus of the entire franchise.

The anime that was released Worldwide was the second adaptación of the manga and it omitted the mortal chicken games althogether because it was too edgy for internacional children

So in a way the right holders of the franchise tried to build a similar collect-a-lot-of-japanese-monsters multimedia franchise like Pokémon

Fuck pokemon, seriously. It feels like such an ancient and outdated game when you play nearly any other JRPG. Like, back in the 90's, Pokemon was right there with other gameboy JRPGs in complexity, story and mechanics. Nowadays, outside of the monster collecting gimmick, it has fallen way behind. Like, any new JRPG released on the 3DS completely blows it out of the water in every aspect outside the monster collecting mechanic.

We seriously need more monster collecting JRPGs, because, playing modern pokemon feels like playing an RPG from 2005.

The second game tried to branch too much. It dropped the monster catching element, dropped the whimsical designs for the most part and got a weird, dark and ugly new aesthetic. It also dropped a bunch of secondary features like building your company.
