gameplay wise, non-playable assists/call in characters are relatively common in one way or another, especially when you can pick them - they quickly and easily add a strategic dimension to the game - selecting the right assist for the right pokemon at the right time is both interesting and loosely meshes with the idea of having a TEAM of pokemon as opposed to just 1v1

so from a gameplay and thematic perspective it's actually one of the smarter things they did

Why are people so autistic about Pikachu Libre? She plays nothing like regular Pikachu and is a different character entirely. I prefer how she plays over regularchu, personally. I kind of get the hate towards Shadow Mewtwo because it's an OC but Libre was already an existing character by time Pokken came around. Variant/Alternative versions of characters isn't exactly unheard of in the genre, is the Pokemon community just that clueless about fighting games?

The actual act of programming this shit is not going to be what's difficult, they have a full system and have already made weirder motherfuckers - Gengar, Chandelure, Garchomp and Sceptile all play weird as hell, but they were made to work rather well, and in keeping with their themes. Even Suicune is a little funky at first glance.

The only actual difficult part is thinking up a comprehensive moveset that is both true to the character and fits in the meta properly. And I guess making the animations?
