I don't think it's really fair to use gen 1 as a comparison considering how you had fuckall idea what your own moves would do and could easily wipe out a useful move for something like rage. BP and other shit only showed up from gen 2 onwards.

FreshER doesn't mean completely fresh and new. A Bug/Electric beetle with strong offense is pretty different from most of the early game bugs so far. Talonflame came first, but I bet Pikipek gets a new type. What else about it would be different enough for a journalist to remark about it?

The actual answer is that video game journalists aren't very smart or particularly informed. They're going to remember the Pokemon games they played as a kid and assume the traditions from then have continued on because the common understanding is that Pokemon has not changed much over the years. Pikipek is likely not more unique than Talonflame, they just aren't aware that the early route regional bird in Kalos evolves into Talonflame. Starting bugs didn't get good until gen 5, either.

It's the Grubbin line. Grubbin appears in the first route and was *supposed* to debut during the first streaming of the game when they showed off the first route - they just screwed up and never encountered it. This is why Grubbin just randomly showed up alongside Yungoos and Pikipek on the website.
