If I were to choose my 3 favourite Pokemon core games (that I've played) I would pick HeartGold, Diamond and White.
FRLG are pretty good for repeated playthroughs since 1st gen has many good and nicely distributed Pokemon but it gets boring way faster than the other games. My reasoning is that Kanto is not varied enough and gives you too many trainers to battle.

The Sevii Islands it's a groundbreaking concept that alleviated the lack of johto dex.

So far only Esmerald and FRLG added post game capture zones never seen before in their games, at least not behind a gimmick(HGSS cyanwood extra safari zone), the Sevii island also had post game side quests and puzzles.

This is why they legitimately count as this for the quartet.
