Its interesting some people are taking the idea of Serena leaving too seriously because of the ship, but for those of us old veteran pokemon anime fans she's the 5th female companion and her departure kind of felt inevitable. Had XY continued for another year or Sun/Moon didn't look like such a drastic change, I think most people felt she could have went on a bit longer.

I notice a lot of young teenagers or people who got back into pokemon with XY after not watching in a long time don't really understand the pokemon anime cycle. They're coming up with conspiracy theories of Serena's popularity or whatever to try and claim she'll stay, (when people did the same for May and Dawn prior), or claim how the Sun/Moon female companion isn't in the next anime so Serena would appear in her clothes....but then again Hilda never appeared in BW so they don't have to use the next female lead from the games anyway.

Some shippers or younger fans also largely trick themselves into thinking Serena is more popular than she is, (she's literally the least watched female companion of the series since XY has such lower ratings than every other series) so I imagine it will be hard for them. If Ash's story ended with XY I could have seen Serena becoming important for endgame status, but now that Ash is going on Serena will largely be cast aside and may not even make a cameo next arc.

Would have liked Serena to stay but whatever.
