It's more tedious than pokemon. Western players generally don't like tedium, while Japanese players tend to like it.

I'll tell you my 9 year old half brother and all his little friends love yokai watch and don't really give a shit about Pokémon. Maybe that's just him and his friends though idk. That doesn't really answer your question but my anecdotal evidence is that young kids like yokai watch.

Those are all characters in the free demo. At least get some late game stuff that won't be recognized.

Honestly it's probably because the name alone sounds weird. Pokemon, you get, they're pocket monsters. But what's a "yokai"? Unfortunately, in spite of the wealth of information at their disposal, today's youth would rather brush it off than look it up. On the flipside, in Japan, you'd hear about yokai in the same terms you'd learn about fairy tales in the west, so there's literally no learning to be done.

It is very much a major Pokemon rival, perhaps more than Digimon ever was, but ONLY in Japan, for that reason. Cultural disconnect's a bitch.

Yeah, young kids seem to love Yokai Watch. I know my niece tried telling me all about Yokai Watch a few months ago when I was visiting my cousin. Adults in the west just don't seem that into it probably because of how silly it is and how simple the gameplay is. Ignore the post above me.

You know what sounds weird? Pokemon. Sounds like Pokay Mon. I never even knew the Pokemon stood for Pocket Monsters until years after I played Red. Hell I couldn't even understand most Japanese people trying to speak English until a few years ago. Most kids don't really care if the name of the game is something unintelligible because a lot of words are unintelligible at that age.
