A lot of people liked Ash as a kid. Some even idolized him. Wore shirts with his face and had imaginary fanfiction fantasies about going into the Pokémon world and traveling with him.

The complex has remained and grown into adult life as they keep up with the show. Though everyone will shit endlessly on Ash whenever he does something dumb or loses, deep down he's still their hero. When you think about it, generation 5 was the only game since the 1st and 2nd generation to not have their female player as Ash's main girl in the anime. Generation 1 had no female player until the remakes and generation 2 didn't have one until Crystal so it makes sense why Misty foot the bill for those seasons, beyond that every region has had a concrete girl player except for Unova which had two due to the 2nd pair of games taking place after the events in the 1st pair. It makes sense why Iris would have to foot the bill in that instance since generation 5 lacked a definitive female heroine, maybe their exclusion of Chicken-chan from the anime says something about what generation 7 has in store for us.
