And this is exactly why the SM anime will be better. SM has no league to drag down the plot. The leagues should stay out of the anime until it's time for Ash to win.

So what's the focus if the leagues are out of the picture? The Lore. XY/Z has been experimenting with long-drawn arcs and they're going to apply what they learned to SM. We'll have Ash do something that he's actually good about: Adventuring and stumbling into mysteries regarding pokemon.

This. XY was experimenting whether long-drawn arcs work, however there was one thing dragging the whole concept down: The Leagues, It was doing a tug-of-war with the arcs on the anime that it caused the finale to be a wreck, but notice how the Flare Arc still had a better finale over the League.

It was because XY is proof that the perpetual chasing the league subplot isn't working anymore. So it's better to stop talking about it for the next series, and the game having nothing was the perfect window to test out a new format.

People are going to complain about the artstyle, but I think the artstyle lends itself best to convey tonal shifts.

We may be laughing at the funny faces, but they were trying to do that with BW, sadly the earthquake didn't lend well to what they were trying to do, and as a result, the plotline was shelved.

The plot can be centered around mini-arcs that have better payoffs than "YAY I GOT A BADGE"

They could have had him win the Kalos league because it was the last league in the games. Nothing about the rest of XY would have changed. They're probably just make some excuse as to why Ash couldn't challenge the Elite 4 right away (busy with repairing Kalos or something) and still send him off to Alola.

This was the perfect time for him to win the league and they blew it. Alan beating Ash 3 times with Mega Charizard makes it even worse.
