Most pokemon are sentient, and can understand humans and communicate with them. But just like human's some are super dumb and others are far smarter than your average human.

It varies between Pokemon. Some are smarter than humans, some have around the same level of intelligence as humans, some are dumber than humans.

But they're all smart enough to understand human speech.

All are capable of understanding language, to the point that they'll use a certain move when told. So that's the lower limit of their intelligence.

Actually this is on the major differences between the games and the anime. In the anime this is clearly true, undeniably.

However in the games, there a quite a lot of Pokémon species that are in no way smarter than regular real-life animals.
Just because you can give them instructions during battle doesn't mean they understand human speech, it's like giving an order to a dog : it doesn't understand or recognize any meaning in the word, it's just memorizing and associating a string of sounds with a certain action.

Agreed. OP should have been more clear on this.

People need to stop treating the anime and the game as the same universe, because it's obviously not, if you count up all the lore that is inconsistent. Having that Ash-frog in the SM demo is triggering to be because of all of this.
