The Popplio line was clearly created with the idea of a mermaid sea lion in mind.

It was not created to be hated. It was created because Game Freak likely found the idea to be neat. They likely found the idea interesting. They also likely found the idea cute.

The Popplio line is simply a line of Pokemon that leans towards a feminine appearance. It's cute. That's all it's trying to go for.

There is absolutely no logical reason to even have a problem with this.

The reason for the 87.5% male aspect of the starters is to make it a bit more difficult to get a female so you can just breed more. It's unlikely that they would change Popplio's ratio, but leave the other two the same.

Because the Popplio line looks specifically designed to look like a female sea lion with ode to mermaid and selkie mythology with a pop idol influence, with no regards to make it look neutral enough to fit its actual species and its well known gender differences.

Of the entire line, Popplio is the only one that looks believable enough to be both genders.
