I'm fairly certain the strength/weakness of a type is influenced heavily by Japanese symbolism and cultural superstition. Ground type is likely seen more as Earth and is a cleansing agent to toxic pollutants in a spiritual and scientific way. Think Princess Mononoke. Psychic is probably something to do with intelligence and wise medicine or perhaps cleansing impurities through meditation.
