i often use the girls canon name, ie lyra/kotone or hilda/touko. other times i use a shortened version/nickname of my own name, or even just my name itself because i dont have a super masculine name, so i dont end up awkwardly with a cute donut haired girl being named "hank" or anything.

Well, back when I was forced to play a boy in Gen 1 and Gen 2 (until Crystal), I just picked a name of one of the kids in my class. My name is not gender neutral, so that was the best option for me.

For games where I played the male for variety, I generally go with one of my male original character's names.

Really, just pick a name you like if you don't want to take a name from a real life source. Though I use to do >>28953172 this for pokemon names, so that's a good alternative.
