Mewtwo can't learn Light Screen or Protect by leveling up. The only attacks we see him use in this battle are ones he can learn without TMs/HMs in gen 1

Every animation has gotten some aspect of battle wrong. The regular anime does it consistently, almost as a theme at least it would be if they stuck with it and didn't randomly have exposition on typing match ups that the show later completely ignores/contradicts
