I'll typically play both versions side-by-side, alternating at arbitrary points, fill out my dex once the story's done, then reset the one I liked more for nuzlocke/egg scramble/race/whatever purposes.

That's how I usually do it.
1st: Get the version that I like the most and pick fav starter.
2nd: Get other version, pick opposite gender and 2nd fav starter
3rd: Restart one game, name myself Ash and trade over the other starters while picking 3rd fav starter.

Because that faggot always seems to get all three starters somehow

Yeah, one becomes save for post game. Other becomes for challenges and nuzlockes.
