I'm fine with them slowing down the pace of new pokemon introduction if it means they're more thorough with them. Unova was great but ~1/3rd of the dex was either fillers to replace geodudes and zubats or fucking hideous legendaries.

Id be okay with this. Thats 15 more than 70, and I did say itd have to be more than 70 for me to cave in. Also keep in mind with what we had prior to this announcement, we had 26 Pokemon lwft to be officially revealed to reach the 70 of Kalos. Now its 23. If you fill in the gaps for obvious evos thats... 5 actual new Pokemon we have no idea about yet and cannot trace it to anything else.

Although Id prefer those 15 remaining mons be entirely new ones and not evos of already announced ones, but hey with all these QoL improvements across the board Id say Im ready to jump in short of any piss easy story mode. Theres so much new content upfront that whether or not there is substantial post game content doesnt matter anymore.

Gen 2 had less than 100 if you don't count babies and ugly evolutions of gen 1 pokemon
Gen 3 had the next most after Unova IIRC, still had several pointless babies like Wynaut and Azurill, filler mons like Plusle and Minun, Illumise and Volbeat which would probably be different genders of the same species if the game came out today
Gen 4 was like gen 2, under 100 if you don't count babies and fucking retarded evolutions
Gen 5 had tons of fillermons and legendaries to pad its count up to 151 fully unique pokemon
Gen 6 only had ~70 pokemon but also introduced 40 megas, and pokemon like Furfrou had multiple different models.
Gen 7 may only have ~80 pokemon but is also introducing Alola forms, which are new models, and possibly new megas in the latter half of the gen. Many of the new pokemon like Wishiwashi have multiple models or new unique abilities.

Raw dex count is a terrible way to measure the amount of new pokemon at this point.

Fire/Fighting is a really good offensive typing for a physical attacker and a so-so defensive typing, but there's a 99% chance that Blaziken will outclass any fire/fighting pokemon due to speed boost and a mega.

Fire/Dark is absolutely garbage defensively and so-so offensively. Fire/fighting would almost unarguably be better.

Dark/Dark would be incredibly lousy on paper since Dark's core resistance is already an immunity.

the Trial Captains are basically the same as gym leaders but with a different turn on it, and the game appears to center around beating them, similar to how they usually are about gym leaders

even if gyms haven't been officially disconfirmed, it's highly unlikely they will feature both at the same time. doing that would make the center around three plots at the same time (captains, villains, and gym leaders), making it somewhat convoluted
not to forget that there doesn't seem to be trace of where the gym leaders would be on the map
