For the most part, the Contests/Tripokalon's were aimed at girls.

All the rivals like Drew/Harley, Zoey/Ursula, Shauna/Millefui were all based on shoujo manga/anime tropes.

May/Drew's rivalry ship with roses, Harley being the flamboyant gay rival, Zoey being the lesbian prince with girly girl Dawn, Ursula being the "mean bitch," Shauna being the bisexual best friend, and Millefeui being the tease for Serena's crush and also possibly lesbian.

What's interesting is how popular this all was with male fans. The writers aimed this stuff at girls but I think guys like it the most.

May literally goes from a carefree girl with no interest in anything but traveling to having to build up confidence and toughness with her rivals, learning about pokemon from Ash and various characters, she's a caring older sister, she goes through a shipping arc with her rival, she has to put up with Harley harrassing her, and so on and so forth.

Aside from that, May has a girl next door personality where she's silly/clumsy but also has a temper and stands her ground if things don't go her way. She just becomes a vehicle to show new pokemon when they're gifted to her, and changes her goal without really much fuzz or any meaningful character building episodes like Dawn or Serena, that can be due to how awful the writing during the entirety of AG is though. The shipping arc with Drew literally feels like she's being gifted a boyfriend, since most of the time she really fits the "Mary Sue" moniker, and at the end that romance arc isn't even given a proper conclusion. I do have to admit that Harley did make things with her more interesting but it's mostly due to Harley being a cunt and not May.

1. Every main girl gets pokemon gifted to them. We have very few "spontaneous wild battle" captures in the show.

2. Her change of arc is basically because she started off just wanting to travel and didn't care about pokemon. It also explains why a Gym leader's daughter wouldn't know how to battle. Likewise her development is during her interactions with her rivals during the Contests because she has no clue what being a coordinator even is. She's shown nervous, slips and falls, and makes mistakes in her first Contest, then gets creamed by Drew and cries.

3. May and Drew are at odds with each other all the way till the end of Hoenn, May constantly argues/bickers with him the whole saga and doesn't start to fall for him till the end. If she had fallen for him the first time she met him that's a different story, but she found him arrogant and condescending and they grew mutual respect for each other after May started improving.

3. In terms of personality May is never portrayed as right, happy or confident all the time. She gets angry all the time, she cries a bit, she's always shown hesitant and nervous before/during contests, etc. She also gets called out by other characters, like Drew, the Nurse Joy in the ep she was pushing her Bulbasaur too hard, Ash and so forth.

Lastly that tumblr post wasn't written by a female, not waifufaggotry. May also has a large female following because they identified with her and liked her rivals.

Basically what I'm saying is that you really have to look hard for those very specific moments when May shows any personality, she and her arc are badly written and boring. When I rewatched Hoenn I was surprised at how utterly bored and uninterested I was most of the time, especially since by the time I rewatched Sinnoh and while watching Kalos I realized May most of the time was a non-character when I saw how much better written Dawn and Serena were, Hoenn's length is not an excuse since Sinnoh was just as long.

In all the big Ash-centric episodes or fillers that focus on COTD's, his friends are going to stand in the background barely doing anything. There's episodes in AG where May does nothing but stands on the sidelines, but so did Serena for most of her run, as well as Dawn outside the episodes she co-starred with Ash. You almost sound like you have double standards here.

May has plenty of episodes outside of Contests that focus on her and her character. The episode she heals the injured Swablu ep, the eps her Wurmple gets switched with Jessie's, the ep she and Meowth travel through time, the eps she bonds with the girl who wants to become a coordinator, the eps that focus on her arguing with Ash or Max, etc.

Then there's May general personality in the episodes. She makes sarcastic comments similar to Misty/Iris, she flares up in anger if someone pushes her buttons too much, she can be shown to be silly/clumsy/goofy, she loves to eat and is stubborn similar to Ash, etc.

Hoenn itself is a mixed bag and there is some boring filler, but I also quite like a number of the fillers like the ep about the giant Claydol, Wishcash stealing Ash's badges, the Sharpedo filler's, and some of the funny eps like, "The Bicker, The Better" and all the pokemon/character driven eps. Ash's Hoenn pokemon like Corphish have some of the funniest personalities, and I liked May's Hoenn team prior to BF.

I do agree with you that both DP and Kalos are better for rather obvious reasons, but I think Hoenn has a lot of fun episodes and May's character is a huge part of it.

Likewise, how do you feel about Serena largely being a background character for the first year of XY?

It's less about Gary himself, and more about the rival who's actually a rival and not some friendly joe off the street or a complete bumblefuck idiot. It gives Ash some actual competition throughout the show and gives people something to look forward to, instead of just having it all be "Collect the 8 magical doodads, lose the tournament, repeat x5".

Gary and Paul were easily the best rivals and the episodes where they kick Ash's ass or Ash kicks their ass are great.

The other bumblefucks are all awful characters - Cameron in particular should never have been created. Any time they show up you just want the episode to be over with.

Alain was a bit different, but he was way too far out of Ash's league to be a rival. Dude can fight at the same level as Steven fucking Stone - him kicking Ash's shit in is always a forgone conclusion.

I thought Ash's personality was okay but suffered because of the lack of interesting plots and episode in nearly every episode, and I only really liked Corphish out of his team, the rest were just eh.

About contests, the only ones I liked were the ones with Harley in them since he was a cunt and made them interesting, and Harley took a long time to appear for the first time. I also liked the last one, the rest just seemed very unremarkable since the performances really didn't become interesting until Sinnoh, I mean May didn't even wear a dress for them.

Ash is accidentally hit by a potent hallucinogen from the local flora that takes a long while to get flushed out of the body, and at that exact moment a mimikyu that has been stalking Ash for a while decides to show itself.

Ash mistakes mimikyu for pikachu and acts all kind and loving to it making pikachu pissed off and mimikyu truly touched that it finally found someone that loves him.

Pikachu acts like a bully during the episode to the poor mimikyu who is unaware of the state Ash is.

Anyway, i would see this episode starting from humor, then a little drama as the tension builts up between Pikachu and Mimikyu and finally a ending that leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling in the watcher.
Anyway this is pretty rough, could be Mimikyu trying to leave when it sets in Ash was only being loving to it because he was under effect of a drug but Ash reveals he has been okay for a while now and was genuine in all the fun times they had together.

Also doubles up as a character development for pikachu.

I have a few ideas on how Team Rocket gets Bewear and Mimikyu on their team. Plus a running sub-plot involving Meowth and a female Alolan Meowth.

I also don't get what you mean. The main reason people liked the Contests also in DP was because of the battling. The appeals were always just a small part of them in both sagas, its also the main reason people don't find the tripokalon's as interesting as Contests because there's no battling.

I also think the better episodes of AG still hold up to this day. Ash's battles with Brawly, Flannery, Winona, parts of Norman, Juan and a lot of the Hoenn league matches are still good to this day. For May's, Beautifly Vs Medicham, Bulbasaur Vs. Harley's Cacturne, Combusken Vs. Grumpig and Skitty Vs. Jynx were all fine, as was the Grand Festival battles. They also continued to improve in Battle Frontier.

What I mean is that Hoenn's boring contests are basically a representation of how dull the entire season is, they're mostly not even interesting visually which is something Tripokalons are way better at (they even give May a cute dress when she comes back during Sinnoh), and AG battles in general are just not very good.

What was wrong with the AG battles I listed above? And I said the appeals are just a minor part of contests, I always watched them for the battles more than anything as well as the funny character interaction between May and her rivals.

Even if those battles were good for AG standards but they're still not as interesting as Sinnoh's or Kalos's, with the exception IMO of Harley's battles. Since I never felt any empathy for May (save for the Manaphy movie where she's an actual character), I wasn't emotionally invested in her battles, since the animation during AG wasn't good that killed those contests for me.

DP made appeal rounds more prominent and contests became more diverse with the combinations they made up for them, besides since I did care for Dawn and Serena, I actually gave a shit about what happened during those contests/Tripokalons. Again, that is my opinion and if you actually got to care about May for some reason then contests made more sense, but for me AG was just very weak and never actually got to make me give a fuck.

They're still good battles for the time as long as you don't consider the improved animation of XY. I just don't get how after everything I've said over this day you don't get why May had an entertaining personality and some nice development moments. Quite a lot of Dawn or Serena's personality quirks or developments moments are very similar to things May did prior.
