What's most troubling is that people seriously believe that the show will change drastically in either feeling or comedy or that Ash will be a much better character just because of a new artstyle. Sure, the new anime will no doubt try to, but it's fucking Pokémon, it will still be the same shit 90% of the time.

Another misconception is that people think the animation will be as fluent as in the trailer all the time. It won't be, it will still be majority slow camera pan scenes or stills just like before, which means the new artstyle makes no difference whatsoever to the actual animation quality, except make the show look exponentially worse. Especially if the speedlines make a return in the battles, though I doubt this would happen seeing how simple the artstyle is now.

I stopped watching the anime back in the Johto league but I've seen clips and such throughout the entire series here and there.

I don't see anything wrong with a more lighthearted animation style, and the autism surrounding this whole thing is baffling. Like people have said in the thread already, of course random stills from animated shots are going to look weird and off-model because shots like those aren't meant to be seen standing still, they're smear frames. They make the movement look more exaggerated and sprightly. And it looks like they're going for more exaggerated reaction shots this time, which also makes the show a little more fun to watch. Shounen typically doesn't do that kind of thing.

It's a cartoon. There's no reason to get so assblasted because it's moving in a different direction than the last season did. They're trying to break the mold and make this season more about "fun" instead of following Ash's typical journey through a region collecting gym badges with two friends and ultimately failing at becoming a champion for the 7th time. You guys bitched when XY stuck to status quo by making Ash lose to Alain, but now you also bitch because they're moving away from status quo and retooling the show to be different. (And who honestly thinks that the show is gonna stay a typical slice of life comedy forever? There are still going to be Pokemon battles for sure, and Ash is obviously going to take on the Kahuna challenges or whatever Alola has at some point.)

You can complain from a stylistic point but the animation in that scene is good.

Animation =/= style.

It's stylistic, a style I don't particularly like, but it's still not bad animation. Animation is about fluidity and in most cases in-motion consistency. Style CAN trump the second if it's purposeful, like it was in the Pain scene. It's that director's style.
