I think people are jumping the gun waaaay too much when it comes to the school setting. For a start, if the leaks about the game is true, then the protagonist is going to be the one who establishes the gyms/E4 for the region. In an anime counterpart, Ash is a VERY experienced trainer when it comes to battling and defeating gym leaders, and obviously with ties to Oak/AlolaOak it would surprise me if that goes on to be the over-arching plot of the series. I also think that the class we're seeing in the trailers is going to be for particularly talented trainers so that Kukui can teach them about Z-moves to research them.

Ash might as well be a new character at this point, so why not use an actual new character? Why not give Ash an ending that fans who not only watched for 20 years can get, but also the newer fans who grew up with AG, DP, XY, etc....don't they deserve an ending too? I think people are forgetting the kids who grew up with AG, DP and XY also got cheated out of an ending, not just those of us oldies from the Kanto days.

We know a Pikachu always has to be around, so just have a new Pikachu with a new character. We sit through a new Charizard every series now, even though Ash's Charizard hasn't appeared in a while.

The writers already get rid of all the female characters no matter how popular some of them were, it would be no different for Ash especially with his character being new to younger fans. Fun fact: Japanese fans on twitter are currently celebrating the 10th anniversary of the DP anime and making new fanart of Dawn. I imagine most of them were the kids from a decade ago who grew up with Dawn as their first girl. If all those fans saw Dawn as a co-star and still saw her get axed after 4 years, there should be no different than anyone else.

To a lesser extent it makes me wonder how all the shippers of Serena's character will react to her leaving, because they pushed the ship hard in Japan with all the promotional material outside the episodes too that the Japanese fandom sees.
