My younger brother and I have a thing where I usually go for the red version and he goes for the blue version. The only time we haven't done this was with gen 4 and gen 6 (I got Diamond and X and he got Pearl and Y.) Every other gen though I've gotten the red version (Gold, Ruby, White/White 2, Heart Gold, and now Sun.) We don't follow a set rule about it, we just usually take the one with the legend we like the best (although in the case of Gold and silver I like the legends equally so I let him choose first)

I used to go for the cool colored games everytime as well, and it worked out because a friend I knew down the street as a kid always picked the other ones, so we would collaborate to fill in any version exclusive gaps.
