That's only because the new art is shit, old Charmander and old Squirtle are very different.

Old Charmander has bit feet and a visible snout, old Squirtle was definitely fatter with a round head and had smaller feet.

Mega Drain, Razor Leaf, Body Slam, Sleep Powder, Toxic, Swords Dance, Growth, Leech Seed...

Bulba-Venusaur actually had moves to work with and choose from and the stats to back them up.

Charizard and Blastoise had very barren movepools.

Blastoise in Gen I didn't had a "barren movepool".
Surf, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Blizzard, Body Slam, Earthquake, Bite (for the Playthrough), Bubblebeam, Seismic Toss.

Blastoise problem was that it was a physically defensive Pokémon with not outstanding stats and had competition with a lot of Water Types.
With Gyarados, Lapras, Starmie and Slowbro as options, Blastoise was outclassed hard.

Fire Types on the other hand, were very bad back then as a whole. Charizard not being able to learn fucking Fly on RBG was the worst thing to happen to it, since it couldn't abuse Swords Dance since the best physical move it was able to learn was Slash before Yellow.

All Kanto starters are fat. Majority of Kanto Pokemon are fat. A lot from Johto once are somewhat fat too. And no, an orange Dragon, with horns isn't generic. The flame on it's tip of tail that represents it's health was a pretty good idea. That alone makes it better than most Dragons in terms of design.
