If Ash was not in XY, and the story focused on Clemont, and all of Ash's story beats were added to Clemont's own, I'd consider XY a good anime.
But It's really just a sub par anime with good animation making up for random fight direction, and a protagonist and other characters who's histories make you wonder why this show even tries to have a canon

If they were ever going to replace Ash, Gotta Catch Ya Later or Memories are Made of Bliss would have been the stopping point.

In the first case, Ash still goes off on a new adventure, but instead May and Brendan get their Pokemon at the same time and maybe some original character tags along. Ash then shows up as a guest character at the league or for a Battle Frontier / FRLG arc. Maybe he's shown learning about the Sinnoh region and starts off an adventure there. Copy>paste for all the generations since. Pokemon Chronicles ends up running as a spinoff side series.

In the second case, it would have fit better with the Pokemon reboot idea with Black and White. Acknowledge Ash got older and improved. Once again he still leaves for Unova, then a more interesting Team Plasma event would have happened with the earthquake being over for a longer period of time. Maybe the main character of the BW anime moves on to Kalos.

It would just be best to consider each "Next time, a new beginning" as Ash regenerating like a Timelord.
