They only use their resources to create new versions of Pokemon; they leave the spinoffs to other developers. Hell, they been working on multiple versions 24/7 with occasional breaks making original games like "Pocket Card Jockey". It obvious that Nintendo forced them to create a new pokemon version within the 1 year time frame of NX, and, since we don't know it it can even connect to the 3DS, it'll have to a new generation to be fully compatible with the NX.

A pokemon version made exclusively for each handheld generation is what rocketed the sales of each of those handhelds. If said game is compatible with the previous handheld generation, then the consumer is less obligated to purchase the latest handheld. Sale numbers bring in 3rd party support, which further increase sales of said handheld. Pokemon Versions are the driving force of Nintendo’s Handheld sales, so it make sense that they wanted a Pokemon version made exclusively for the NX. Which is why they wanted Game Freak, who only make Versions in terms of Pokemon, to create a game exclusive for the NX. You should also realize that Sun and Moon was directed by the same guy who directed the RSE remake; so it’s possible that Masuda is with another team working on the NX exclusive at the same time as Sun/Moon’s development.

Personally, I’m disappointed that GF jump the gun with the N3DS when it’s obvious that NX is coming and they could’ve focusing their resources on that.
